Hi all! Back from a nice winter break and returned with many interesting news. Lets get down to business shall we? Lets talk about the most talked about tech toy this season, you know what I'm talking about... yup the new Apple iPhone! I know some of you are already over saturated with the information but this is blogging and I get to put in my two cents on the net! So what is all this excitement about? Its just a phone right, or is it a computer, perhaps a mp3 player, or a portable web browser? Well its all of that and then some. Sure these type of phones are already available in the market that does just the same if not better. Phones like the Motorola Q, Palm's Treo Series and even the Blackberry fits into that category. So what makes the iPhone stand out so well that it can even drop the market shares of the competitors? One name: Steve Jobs. This guy is powerful! He knows how to get people excited! Anyways, lets talk about the iPhones capabilities and its possible ups and downs when it is released in June.
We have learned a lot from Jobs' keynote at the Mac Expo in San Francisco. First and perhaps the most impressive element of the iPhone is the screen's functionality. It is a sexy wides-touch-screen with a 320x480 resolution. But wait! It is not your standard touch screen where you just poke around, it is a multi finger sensing touch screen. This means you can do many cool things with it, like zooming in, faster on screen typing and many other functions that developer can implement for the user. Next big thing about the phone is that it is running on Leopard. Full version maybe? stripped down version, most likely. It seems incredible that Apple can fit that awesome OS into that tiny little thing! Then of course the iPod function on the phone. The long rumored, wide-touch-screen video iPod end up not as many had thought it would be. With 8Gig of storage it would it is more than sufficient for your phonebook, calendar, text messages and some photos. As for music, video and storage in general... it seems lacking. Widget implementation on the phone should proof to be an awesome addition to phones. you can easily get your weather, sport scores, and movie times just by touching the icon. How does it get the information?
This brings us to the iPhones connection capabilities. Initially iPhone will be working strictly with Cingular (now at&t) and using their EDGE data connection which is 2.5G and not 3G network. This just means that it is not using the latest and fastest mobile broadband speed (Verizon and Sprint are on high speed 3G networks) But fear not, the iPhone support WiFi connection too! How well the WiFi works, we have yet to find out, but it should be promising. So with internet connection, this phone will let you browse on the internet nicely. With Safari as the browser, you will be able to browse internet like you would normally at home, but on a smaller screen. Still it is much better than using some of the phones we have today! And like many phones today, it will come with a camera, a 2megapixel camera, which is always nice. About 5hr of talk time battery life sounds decent for a phone, how realistic is this? Web surfing, music listening and movie viewing can drain a lot of power too, so the battery life may not be as good as one may hope.
So as you can see, it is not all good with the iPhone. Great innovations in some areas, not so great in others. But the phone is due out in June, it is still possible to fine tune and fix all the problems and complains that everyone is talking about.
Lastly, at a price point of $499 and $599 for the 4 and 8gigs version seems a little steep in price if you ask me but like most of us, we'll probably shell out the dough just like most of us did for the iPods... Has Apple brainwashed us!?
